Build description
A starter 1-bar Heavy Attack Stamina Dragonknight build that can easily do 50k+ DPS with base-game unoptimized gear. No mythics, DLC or crafting skills required! Great for a brand new account.
This build is an export of my actual character on the EU server. I do about 60k on a trial dummy with it. I'm only using one bar for parsing, and my gear traits are mostly random. I did upgrade my weapon to a purple precise one though - upgrading weapons makes a pretty big difference, so that's worth doing as early as you can. But I was doing over 40k with a blue weapon with the wrong trait when half my body pieces were Sergeant's Mail heavy armour, so just use whatever you have until you can get upgrades. With that damage you can even solo Wayrest Sewers and Tempest Island to farm gear.
Class: Dragonknight. Because Dragonknight gives you easy access to the most important buffs from Oakensoul: Empower, Major Prophecy/Savagery and Major Brutality/Sorcery. So, you don't need Oakensoul.
Race: Whatever you like the most. Dark Elf would be most optimal for trials, but not by much. Do whatever you like!
Attributes: All into Stamina.
We are a lightning staff heavy attack build, but we have all our points in stamina because that's what the Storm Master set comes with by default. Heavy attacking restores magicka constantly anyway, so it's not like that's a problem. Plus, you get to sprint, block and roll dodge a lot more than a magicka build. If you have someone to craft you magicka glyphs, you can use magicka instead if you want.
Mundus Stone: The Thief, for a nice boost to crit chance.
Skills:
Molten Armaments - This skill is the #1 reason to choose a DK for this build, keep this up at all times - you need it for the Empower buff to your Heavy Attacks.
Flames of Oblivion - Adds some nice bonus fire damage, and a nice passive crit buff.
Barbed Trap - Good damage over time and gives you the Minor Force buff.
Unstable Wall of Elements - Lightning damage over time, and helps to proc Off-Balance occasionally for a nice Heavy Attack damage bonus.
Burning Talons - Cast this inbetween heavy attacks anytime you don't need to refresh a timer on any of your other skills.
Self-Healing:
In some trials/dungeon situations, you might want a self-heal on your bar. Dragonknight has a good burst heal called Coagulating Blood (morph of Dragon Blood). Resolving Vigor is also good - you can get it by doing the Cyrodiil intro quest. It's up to you what skill on your bar to sacrifice for the heal. If you're running around a lot, it's probably best to replace Barped Trap.
Back Bar (optional):
Since we do in fact have a back bar, what do we do with it? You can do whatever you want with it, but I like to have a Sergeant's Mail two handed weapon there, because I enjoy two handed skills, and because heavy attacking with 2H is also pretty good for soloing dungeons and things. Carve is a nice 2H skill that gives you a shield and also applies a bleed damage over time to everything you hit with it. And Stampede is just a really fun skill that also happens to do good damage over time.
Why show a horribly unoptimized build to the world?:
Because most other guides have full gold gear, perfect traits, maxed out CP, mythics, etc. All of which can look pretty daunting to someone who just got started in ESO. They might know that 90k+ DPS is possible on the optimal build, but how does it do long before you manage to grind all of that stuff out? That's why I'm specifically showcasing this sub-optimal build.
What next?:
Once you've hit 60k with this build and are comfortable with it, you can think about slowly transitioning over to something more optimized, like the "EASY Dragonknight Heavy Attack DPS Build" by Nefas (search for it on YouTube or ESO University). You can use the CP from that guide if you have more points than what I had at the time I exported my character for this guide.
